Tarot Structure: Major Arcana vs Minor Arcana
The full 78-card tarot deck falls into two distinct groups: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana, each with separate roles.
The Major Arcana (22 cards) include well-known cards such as The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, Death and The World. They stand for big life themes, major turning points and spiritual growth, tracing humanity’s whole life journey. Drawing Major Arcana usually signals important life-changing choices and larger-scale lessons.
The Minor Arcana (56 cards) are split into four suits. They focus on everyday reality: small life events, relationships, shifting moods, work gains and losses. If Major Arcana are the main plot of your life movie, Minor Arcana are the short daily scenes.
During readings, both sets appear together. Major Arcana reveal core themes and spiritual direction. Minor Arcana fill in practical details, processes and surrounding circumstances. Only combining both gives the full picture.
