Caring for Your Tarot Deck: Cleansing and Respect

Moonlight, smoke cleansing, storage care — really about resetting your mind.

Many tarot readers talk about deck cleansing. From an esoteric view it is ritual. Practically speaking, it mostly helps you reset your own mental state. There is no scientifically-proven “energy”. Even so, good care lets your deck last for years. Popular cleansing methods Moonlight cleansing: Lay your cards out near a window under the full moon. This is the most well-known practice. Smoke cleansing: Pass the deck gently through smoke from sage or palo santo. Be fire-safe, keep away from flammable items and ventilate rooms well. Knocking: Tap the top of the card stack lightly as a mental reset ritual. Never wash cards with water; it will ruin paper and printing. Storage tips Keep cards inside their original box or a soft velvet pouch. Store somewhere dry and away from direct sunlight, to prevent bending and fading. Avoid leaving them lying on the floor. Ritual and respect There is no need for overly superstitious rules. The myth that “no-one else may touch your deck” is not universal. If you feel uncomfortable with others handling it, keep it to yourself. Before shuffling, slow down and focus on your question — this is where real ritual lives. Bear in mind: so-called energy cleansing works mostly as psychological suggestion to let go of previous reading thoughts. Cards are physical paper objects. What truly matters is the awareness and reflection of the reader.
