Court Cards: Personalities & Roles

Alongside numbered Minor Arcana cards are 16 Court Cards: Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings, one set for each suit. New readers often struggle with them. Court cards can stand for real people in your life, or parts of your own personality. Page: The learner and messenger. Energy in its early budding stage. Curious and eager to learn, yet inexperienced and sometimes restless. May represent young people, or incoming news and fresh beginnings. Knight: The active pursuer. Full of passion and drive, but prone to recklessness and rushing ahead without full consideration. Queen: Receptive feminine energy. Deep capacity for feeling, empathy and nurture. Mature inner awareness of her element. Can also lean into excessive moodiness. King: Integrated masculine energy. Full mastery over his suit’s power, calm and capable. Shadow side includes stubbornness and the urge to control. For instance, the Knight of Cups may be a romantic suitor in real life, or your own growing longing for emotional connection. The King of Pentacles can be a grounded senior manager, or your inner self that manages resources wisely. Two ways to read court cards: they can represent external people, or parts inside you — traits you need to grow into, or patterns you should watch out for. Avoid treating them only as fixed real-world individuals.
